Market Focus: Little Island Jamaican Restaurant

Little Island Logo
‘Spicy’ doesn’t do the food served by Little Island justice. Outrageously delicious comes closer. Authentic chunks of marinated pork or chicken with peas and beans and plantain, or curried chicken with rice will make your taste buds dance with pleasure. Little Island is the only authenic Jamaican restaurant in Hillsborough and their goal is to provide excellent food and great service. Entrees can be ordered with or without spicy sauce. Can you take the heat?

Enjoy their tantalizing fare at Montgomery’s Farmers Market most Saturdays. During the week get your fix at their restaurant in Kingsbridge Center, at 378 South Branch Road, near the Hillsborough library. Little Island is open daily for lunch and dinner, except Monday. In addition to their jerk chicken and pork, they offer Island fish and chips, soups, sandwiches and wraps. Having an event? Little Island will take care of you.

Chickadee Farm

Today she is called Farmer Jess, but it wasn’t always so. It wasn’t always clear where her destiny lay in the years after Jessie Niederer graduated from Cornell University. In those early days, Jess believed that her path lay in conservation, disaster relief or development work. She tried her hand at all of them until the pull of 12 generations of Niederer farmers drew her to follow family tradition. A Niederer farm has existed in the Hopewell Valley since 1910, starting as dairy farmers. Today Chickaee Creek Farm focuses on growing wholesome organic fruits and vegetables and is USDA certified organic.

“Chickadee Farm"

Chickadee Creek Farm rests on 80 acres along Titus Mill Road in Pennington, NJ, where they grow vegetable varieties selected for flavor and suitability to the local climate, including zucchini, heirloom tomatoes, hot peppers to sweet lettuces, delicious melons, and colorful flowers. Their goal is to live sustainably and make healthy, flavorful and affordable food available to the public. A portion of the farm is classified as “Transitional organic”, a three-year process of converting
and certifying legacy acreage into organic farmland.

Their tasty and healthy produce is available at the Montgomery Farmers’ Market. You can visit the farm to pick your own or purchase a farm share for a steady supply of freshly-picked goodness throughout the growing season. Farmer Jess offers apprenticeship/internship opportunities, as well as work shares for those who are interested in working for their food. For those who just like to get out and work in good clean soil, volunteers are welcomed. To learn more, go to their website: chickadeecreekfarm.com.

Funds from our sponsors defray the costs for Montgomery Friends of Open Space, a 501c3 nonprofit organization to operate the farmers’ market for the community. Thank you for your support!

Market Focus : WoodsEdge Farms

2014 Montgomery Farmers' Market

WoodsEdge Wools Farm began with an ambition to create things of beauty and excellence. Seeking materials to make her dream a reality, Linda Berry Walker looked for a specific feel, color and design for her unique products, but found none to her liking. It was clear she needed to do everything herself from scratch. It was journey that took her down paths she never envisioned, accumulating technical knowledge of processing wool, breeding, and exhaustive design work. Hard work, but in it Linda found expression of her calling and the rewards of seeing her artistic vision available to others.

Over the course of 37 years, WoodsEdge Wools Farm has grown into one of the largest herds of suri llamas in the world; representing a wide diversity of genetic lines. They are also the first alpaca breeding farm in the state of New Jersey. The farm produces a highly diversified line of products including socks, rugs to hats, including meat — both beef and yak — which they now sell at our market! There is an apprenticeship program for sustainable farming.

Linda’s son Brett now runs the farm. It is run in a sustainable way and on preserved farmland. Located in Stockton, NJ, the public can visit the farm to take tours, bicycle the Llama Loop, see the llamas, alpacas and yaks; or buy a variety of quality items from their farm store.

We are lucky to have had WoodsEdge Wools selling at our Farmers’ Market for many years. Pick up their unique products along with your produce this week!
