Montgomery Friends of Open Space (MFOS) is a nonprofit all-volunteer organization formed in March 2002. Our main goals are to preserve remaining open land in Montgomery Township, to act as stewards for the properties already preserved, and to run a farmers’ market to support local agriculture. Our township’s population has doubled in the past 15 years. By working hard to protect the remaining open land, we hope to achieve a better balance between growth and preservation.
Preservation
Although MFOS is an independent organization, we work closely with Montgomery Township and rely on their Conservation Plan to help implement open space goals. Some of the funds available for land preservation from the State of New Jersey Green Acres Program are set aside only for nonprofits such as MFOS. We then match these funds with other contributions to purchase open land or development rights. Significant funding is also available to MFOS for farmland preservation under the State Agricultural Development Committee’s Farmland Preservation Program. MFOS is also actively involved with the Township in developing an extensive network of bike paths and recreational trails within Montgomery.
Stewardship
Preserving open space is just the first step. Preserved properties need to be maintained to preserve wildlife habitat. Pathways need to be created so that the public can safely enjoy these spaces.
Montgomery Friends Farmers’ Market
MFOS runs a farmers’ market every Saturday from June through October from 9 am to 1 pm. By offering fresh, locally grown produce, poultry, organic vegetables, herbs, flowers, salsa, fresh bread, and more, MFOS is supporting local farmers and New Jersey agriculture.
