Get Involved

Montgomery Friends of Open Space is made up entirely of volunteers. We operate without the expense of staff. Consequently, the Board of Trustees is very active in every aspect of running the organization and ensuring that we achieve our goals. But WE NEED YOUR HELP. We need financial assistance in the form of membership dues and contributions. Just as importantly, we need volunteers to help us accomplish the many tasks involved in managing an organization. In short, we seek the traditional 3 W’s of non-profits – wealth, wisdom, and work. Some of the activities with which you can help are set forth below.

Open Volunteer Spots: Unlimited

People have fun when they participate in our events and projects. Meeting new people, or being with friends, working on something together is both rewarding and enjoyable. One can do a little or a lot. Tell us what…Find Out More

Stewardship: Involves reforestation projects, clearing trees and brush from pathways, removing invasive species from preserved land, and monitoring preserved properties. We do planning, design, and coordination of improvement projects such as pathways, walkways, reforestation, and other activities or events. For example, in early 2007, we were involved in planting 900 trees in one day. Careful planning went into the project and having many hands available made the work lighter and fun for everyone.

Farmers’ Market: We have a person to manage the market. We seek help in setting up tents and tables at the starting hour and with disassembly at the end of the day. Waiting on customers and restocking baskets on the tables are part of the routine. We have a core of loyal customers whom you will enjoy getting to know. There are also opportunities to help with publicity.

Membership/Fundraising: Our Membership/Fundraising Committee organizes our annual membership and fundraising drives, as well as our annual meeting, to which all members are invited. Envelope stuffing is involved, but more basic is the need for accurately maintained membership and contribution records which must have written acknowledgment at tax time. People experienced in grant seeking and writing would be an enormous help in this area, as well.

Communications/Education: We can always use writers. Part of our job is to keep the public at large informed about conservation and preservation issues. At the same time, we want to ensure that people are aware of our activities, and we would like to organize and participate in educational programs. Can you help with this?
