Diwali Festival at Montgomery Farmers Market

October 18, 2025 @ 10:30 AM - 12:00 PM EDT

Diwali, the “festival of lights,” is a vibrant celebration of joy, hope, and liberation across South Asia and the Colorful Rangoli Drawingdiaspora.  Celebrate the triumph of good over evil, freedom over oppression, and the interconnectedness of all life at Montgomery’s farmers market by painting your unique diya and/or creating community through a rangoli competition.

Activities are from 10:30am to noon.  Open to anyone.  Ages 16 and above for rangoli painting. No registration or fees required, just come to the activity table next to the Montgomery Friends of Open Space table and say you want to participate.  Supplies provided.

Rangoli is a cherished Indian folk art created at the entrances of homes to welcome visitors and invite good luck. Crafted from colored rice, sand, or flower petals, these designs can be geometric patterns, floral motifs, and more, each carrying cultural significance across various regions.

A diya is a clay lamp with a cotton wick, using oil or ghee for fuel, creating a soft light. Central to Diwali, they symbolize hope and the triumph of light over darkness, enhancing a festive ambiance. Diyas come in various designs and have been integrated into modern décor and cultural celebrations.
